Floating Biogas Plant

The Floating Biogas Plant from Emerald Enterprises turns everyday organic waste into clean biogas for cooking, heating and power generation. Its gas holder sits in a water jacket above the digester, which stores gas at a steady pressure and keeps the plant easy to access for maintenance.

How it works

Waste mixed with water is fed into the FRP digester, where bacteria break it down without oxygen. The biogas released collects under the gas holder, which rises as gas builds up and settles as you use it — a simple, proven design. The water jacket seals the gas holder, and the digested slurry that flows out is a useful organic fertiliser.

• Durable, corrosion-resistant FRP construction for a long service life
• Processes food waste, agricultural waste, cow dung and sewage
• Six water-jacket models from 0.5 m³ to 3 m³ (320 L to 2,200 L digester volume)
• Daily waste input from 2.5 kg to 30 kg, giving about 45 minutes to 5 hours of gas per day depending on the model
• Produces nutrient-rich slurry that can be used as organic fertiliser

What biogas can replace

According to MNRE, 1 m³ of biogas is roughly equal to 0.42 kg of LPG, 0.62 litres of kerosene or 3.47 kg of firewood. Over a year, a correctly sized plant can make a real difference to fuel costs while dealing with your organic waste on site.

Care and maintenance

• Feed a similar amount of waste every day; sudden large increases can make the digester acidic and stop gas production
• Mix waste with water before feeding
• Keep plastic, glass, metal, paper, chemicals and detergents out of the plant
• Add citrus peels and tamarind only in small quantities
• Use the gas in a well-ventilated kitchen and keep open flames away from the gas holder

Government support
